DRC’s Doug Russell Named Chairman of Board for Kids Voting Minnesota

Program annually trains more than 200,000 students on civic responsibility

Doug Russell, vice president of surveys and document services, has been named the chairman of the board of directors for the non-profit, non-partisan program Kids Voting Minnesota.

Kids Voting is a voter education program for K-12 students. The classroom curriculum focuses on activities that encourage students to develop critical thinking skills and understand the voting process. Russell will chair the program, which in 2004 trained over 200,000 students on the importance of civic duty.

Lars Sandstrom, executive director of Kids Voting Minnesota, praised Russell’s and DRC’s past contributions to the program. “Doug has been very helpful in getting the board focused on our mission in Minnesota. He has brought the resources of Data Recognition Corporation in to support the program with the very important task of developing and printing scannable ballots, as well as assisting in software support to interpret the results. Kids Voting appreciates this partnership that Doug has made possible.”

Last year, DRC developed and printed 100,000 voting ballots, which replicated adult ballots featuring the same issues and races. The ballots were distributed to 40 school districts across Minnesota, including Minneapolis and St. Paul.

“The Kids Voting program is literally an investment in this country’s future,” Russell said. “And while DRC is involved in a wide range of cause-related programs, I am particularly proud of this one.” DRC sponsors the Kids Voting Minnesota along with other Minnesota companies, including the Star Tribune Foundation and the Best Buy Children’s Foundation.
